Case study: Anaplastic astrocytoma in a dog

ABSTRACT

An adult male Boxer dog with a history of chronic otitis media in the left ear and seizures was submitted for medical therapy. The seizures were progressive and the owner opted for euthanasia. Grossly, there was a whitish mass at white matter of the parietal region near the lateral ventricle. Histopathological examination showed proliferation of atypical cells, ranging from hyperchromatic round cells to bizarre multinucleated cells with vesicular nuclei, a large and conspicuous nucleolus, high mitotic activity and atypical mitotic figures. Immuno-histochemical analysis revealed multifocal weak positive immune-staining for glial fibrillary acidic protein and S100 protein, multifocal and moderate for vimentin and negative immunostaining for cytokeratin and p53. The percentage of immunostained cells for Ki-67 was 9.6%. A definitive diagnosis of anaplastic astrocytoma was based on the histopathological and immuno-histochemical features.
