ABSTRACT

Akbari G, Gilanpour H, Adibmoradi M., Anatomy of male squirrel (Sciurus anomalus) reproductive organs, Onl J Vet Res., 20(7):453-464, 2016. Although squirrels (Sciurus anomalus) are a wild species, they are kept as domesticated animals with increased referrals. We describe macroscopic and microscopic anatomy of 7 male Persian squirrels suffering from ailments not associated with the reproductive tract. The ellipsoidal testes of the Persian squirrel were large, pink brown with scrotal pouches in contact with abdominal muscles of the pubis with average length, 2.17±0.32cm, diameter 1.26±0.21cm, weight 1.55±0.46g and volume 1.87±0.82cm3 comprising 0.82 ± 0.02% body weight. The epididymis was elongated with convoluted tube attached to testes dorsolaterally measuring 28.82±0.32cm. Paired ductus deferens ascended in mesoductus on medial surface of the cauda joining long thick spermatic cords ending in the urethra without ampulla with average length of 25.28±0.61 cm and diameter 0.11±0.02cm. Accessory glands included coagulating, prostate, and bulbourethral glands; with the ducts of the bulbourethral glands independently opening into bulb of penis in dorsal urethra. Average length was 0.03±0.01cm and width 0.02±0.01cm The duct of the gland ended at urethra at distal penis. The penis was J-shaped with a length of 5.87±0.68cm length with a penis bone. A nail-like cartilaginous structure was found at the tip of the penis. Various images represent the described structures.
