Anxiolytic and anticonvulsant properties of Anthocyanin extract of Echium amoenum in mice

ABSTRACT

 

Bozorgi H, Motaghi E, Chizari  Z, Taghian M., Anxiolytic and anticonvulsant properties of anthocyanin extract of Echium amoenum in mice, Onl J Vet Res., 17 (11):642-648, 2013. Anthocyanin extract of Echium amoenum flowers was given intraperitoneally (IP) to mice at a dose of 50mg/kg. Sedative and anxiolytic effects of Echium were compared with mice vehicle and diazepam controls. There was increased time-spent and arm entries in open arms but reduced time-spent in closed arms of elevated plus-maze (EPM) in mice given Echium. The extract had no significant effect on drug test duration of tonic hind limb extension (THE) compared with vehicle controls. Locomotor activity was reduced compared with vehicle but not diazepam mice controls. Results suggest that Echium may have sedative properties but diazepam sedation was more severe. Anthocyanin extract of E. amoenum could have anxiolytic but not anticonvulsant activity in a mice model. The active constituents of the Echium should be isolated and tested for anxiolytic and anticonvulsant properties.
