Prevalence of avian influenza virus H9N2 in aquatic birds

ABSTRACT

Waterfowl such as ducks, geese, and swans are natural hosts for most avian influenza viruses (AIV) but do not exhibit symptoms. The role of wild birds in maintaining LPAI viruses can be determined through serological surveillance. The risk of virus introduction into Khozestan, Iran is high and for this reason the prevalence of AIV subtype H9N2 infection in aquatic birds is reported. Results suggested that the prevalence of LPAI H9N2 in wild birds was close to 100% as antibodies were detected in the sera of all birds which are probably reservoirs for AI H9N2 viruses.
