 In vitro effect of Artemisia santolina extracts on motility and survival of Haemonchus contortus

In vitro effect of Artemisia santolina extracts on motility and survival of Haemonchus contortus, Onl J Vet Res., 18(10): 785-789,  2014.  In small ruminants, the abomasal parasite Haemonchus contortus induces normocytic-hypochromic anemia and weight loss. Because of increasing resistance to current anthelminths, residues and high costs, extracts of medicinal plants are being tested as alternatives. In vitro anthelmintic activity of dried Artemisia santolina aqueous and ethanolic extracts on Haemonchus contortus were compared with levamisole. Fifty mature Haemonchus contortus were exposed to Artemisia santolina 25, 50 and 75 mg/ml aqueous and ethanolic extracts for 10 hours at 25°C. PBS buffer was used as  negative control, 50mg/ml levamisole as positive control and 5mg/ml levamisol as a standard. A worm motility inhibition assay and survival analysis using the Cox proportional hazard model were used for data analysis. Extracts of Artemisia santolina reduced (P < 0.05) Haemonchus contortus motility and survival in a time and dose dependent manner. Compared with levamisole, the ethanolic extract had greater (P < 0.05) anti-helminth effect whereas the aqueous extract less.
