Molecular evidence for Babesia spp. in cattle in the Philippines

ABSTRACT

Molecular and parasitological techniques were conducted to detect the presence of Babesia spp. in cattle in Quirino Province, Philippines. A total of 246 field bovine blood samples were collected and subjected to blood parasite examination (BPE) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay. None were found positive for Babesia spp using BPE. However, detectable ~650 bp amplicons using Babesia genus-specific primers were obtained with PCR. An overall parasite prevalence rate of 2.03% was recorded in the province of Quirino. In addition, PCR positive animals were mostly females belonging to age group ≤ 1 year old. This is the first reported molecular evidence of bovine babesiosis in the Philippines.
