ABSTRACT

Naghib SM, Pourjafar M, Rowshan Ghasrodashti A, Nazifi S, Badiei K, Chalmeh A., Effect of ration bentonite and montmorillonite on acute phase proteins in transition Holstein cows, Onl J Vet Res., 17(9):503-507, 2013. The effect of ration bentonite and montmorillonite on acute phase proteins induced by endotoxins in Multiparous Holstein transition dairy cows is described. Serum haptoglobin (Hp), amyloid A (SAA), tumor  necrosis  factor-α (TNF-α) and fibrinogen (Fib) were measured 3 weeks before and after parturition. Thirty control cows received a balanced ration and 30 supplemented with bentonite and montmorillonite (treated group). Compared with controls, acute phase proteins, SAA and fibrinogen declined in treated pre- and postpartum cows. The findings suggested that bentonite and montmorillonite may ameliorate acute phase protein response in transition cows.

Key words: endotoxin adsorbent, acute phase response, transition period, dairy cow.
