Non-effect of probiotic (Bifidobacterium infantis) on bone density and bone loss in male rats

ABSTRACT

 

Mehdi T, Ehsan TM, Mojtaba N, Masumeh G., Non-effect of probiotic (Bifidobacterium infantis) on bone density and bone loss in male rats, Onl J Vet Res., 19(9): 609-612, 2015. Intestinal flora may affect bone health and the effect of probiotic bacteria on bone density is described.  Nine rats were fed ~109 Bifidobacterium infantis probiotics daily and at 70 days were ligated around one 1st molar. Thirty days later the animals were euthanized, the mandibular bone removed, and bone loss assessed. Another 9 ligated rats, not fed probiotics were used as controls. Ligated teeth displayed a significant decrease in bone density in all rats (p < 0.05). However, this study showed no significant differences among the ligated teeth between rats given probiotic and controls (p > 0.05). Results suggest that Bifidobacterium infantis does not affect alveolar bone density or bone loss in ligated teeth.
