Antimicrobial activity of probiotic bifidobacteria isolated from cattle

in mice experimentally infected with E. coli O157: H7

Tahamtan Y, Sarvestani MS., Antimicrobial activity of Probiotic Bifidobacteria isolated from cattle in mice experimentally infected with E. coli O157: H7, Onl J Vet Res., 20(3):183-189, 2016.  Shiga toxin of E. coli O157: H7 and translocation is a key factor for the lethality of E. coli O157 in infant mice. Antimicrobial activity of probiotic bifidobacteria against E. coli O157 experimentally infection in mice was investigated. Infant mice were orally infected with E. coli O157 by B. lactis, animalis, longum and bifidum. Infant mice groups pretreated with B. animalis died, whilst others remained alive. B. bifidum displayed greater antimicrobial activity than B. animalis, B. lactis and B. longum. No significant difference was noted in the number of E. coli O157 in the feces nor histopathological lesions in GI tract of infant mice model as they died before histopathological changes were exhibited. In conclusion, B. bifidum exhibited greater antimicrobial activity than B. animalis, B. lactis and B. longum.
