Blood pressure and gases in dogs given ketamine with xylazine or diazepam.

ABSTRACT

 

Kul M, Koç Y, Alkan F, Ogurtan Z: Blood pressure and gases in dogs given ketamine with xylazine or diazepam. Onl J Vet Res., 30 (2): 109-116, 2026. Two groups of six dogs blood pressure, gases, pH and temperatures given intramuscular ketamine with xylazine or diazepam are described.  We took femoral artery pressure, blood, gases and pH.  2 mg/kg xylazine was injected intramuscular 5 minutes before 20 mg/kg ketamine whereas 0.2mg/kg diazepam was given intravenously. Baseline data was recorded before anaesthesia and 15, 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes after.  Heart and respiratory rates were measured with a stethoscope and respiratory movements/minute were counted. Rectal temperature was taken with a digital thermometer. Baseline heart and respiratory rates, and rectal body temperatures were recorded prior to the placement of a percutaneous arterial catheter under lidocaine induced local anesthesia. Compared with control values at time 0, In dogs given xylazine by 30 minutes respiration declined (P < 0.05) ~25, heart rate ~30, Blood pressure ~20 and blood carbon dioxide pressure ~16% whereas in those given dopamine respiration increased (P < 0.05) ~20, heart rate ~27% and blood pressure 10% without changes in blood carbon dioxide or oxygen pressures. Similar data occurred by 60, 90 and 120 minutes.
