A serologic investigation of Brucella melitensis of farm animals and dogs in Southern Greece by indirect and competitive ELISA.

Burriel AR, Bisias G, Butsini S, Kontos V, Serologic study of Brucella melitensis in farm animals and dogs in Greece by indirect and competitive ELISA. Onl J Vet Res., 1:53-56, 2002. Cattle (277), 516 pigs, 264 sheep, 292 goats and 287 dogs serum samples from animals with or without reproductive problems were tested for Brucella melitensis by competitive (cELISA) and indirect (iELISA) tests. Using both tests, bovine samples were negative, dogs were negative to cELISA but 2 and 7 suspects were found by rapid agglutination test to B canis and B melitensis, respectively. Fourteen pig samples showed low association and 1 positive using cELISA. B melitensis antibody was found in 2.3 and 9.4% of normal sheep but 39.4 and 26% in abortive sheep using the cELISA and iELISA, respectively. In goats, 11.3 and 19.5% tested positive. cELISA and iELISA showed 85% and 59% agreement in positive tests from sheep and goats, respectively. Of 779 serum samples tested with both ELISA methods, 95 were positive with iELISA and 60 with cELISA but only 57.9% of the 95 samples were positive with both methods. The results show that B. melitensis in small ruminants is not yet an epidemiological threat to other farm animals or dogs in Greece
