Management practices associated with bulk tank total bacterial milk count in dairy herds.

Abstract

We report management risk factors related to bulk tank total bacterial count (TBC) at 79 dairy farms in Fars, Iran. Farm demographics, herd management, milking procedures and hygiene were compiled by questionnaire. Association of risk factors with the log of TBC was determined using a linear mixed model adjustment for effects of district and herd size. Mean and median TBC was 9.41.9×105 and 1.1×105 cfu/ml, respectively. Not feeding during milking, teat disinfection after milking, cooling of milk before delivery and artificial insemination were associated with lower TBC.
