ABSTRACT

Marzok M, Strommenger W,  Höppner S,  Hertsch B., Surgical repulsion of maxillary check teeth with the aid of the C-arm fluoroscopy technique in equine: A safe method (study of 16 horses), Online J Vet Res., 13 (2):1-18, 2009.  Sixteen horses of different sexes, ages and breeds were presented to the equine clinic at the Free University, Berlin and underwent fluoroscopic guided surgical repulsion of maxillary check teeth. Using the technique, no repulsion of wrong teeth, fracture of the lateral or medial wall of the alveolus or palatine bone, or tooth fracture occurred. The horses were hospitalized for an average of 40 days (range, 22-85 days). Two horses developed postoperative complications during the hospitalization period but by 12 months, all cases except one, were resolved satisfactorily. One horse presented 3 months after, with orosinus fistula and underwent surgery with resolution by 5 weeks. In conclusion, the C-arm fluoroscopy technology proved to be an effective and safe procedure for extraction of equine check teeth.
