ABSTRACT

Asgari Safdar AH, Dayyani N, Moradi Kor N., Effect of fatty acids on reproduction and blood hormones in Ashwari ewes, Onl J Vet Res., 18(5): 432-437, 2014. Four groups of 12 flushing Ashwari ewes each were fed 14 days a basal ration with grain,  5% calcium salts of fatty acids (CSFA) from flaxseed oil, or 5% CSFA from sun flower oil. Controls were fed a basal diet. The first three diets appeared to improve lambing rates. Ewes given CSFA from flaxseed had the highest progeny with 18 lambs whereas controls had 10 lambs. Progesterone and cholesterol levels in sheep given CSFA from flaxseed oil were higher than other groups. The findings suggest that dietary CSFA may increase hormones  related to reproductive performance.

Key words: CSFA, flushing, lambing rate, reproductive performance, Afshari ewe.
