Prevalence of Dipetalonema evansi infection in Camelus dromedaries.

Dipetalonema evansi is a filarid nematode only found in camels. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence and seasonal fluctuation of Dipetalonema evansi in one-humped camel (Camelus dromedarius) in the southeast part of Iran. In the study, the testicles, epidymis, spermatic cords, and lungs of 309 camels of different ages and both sexes slaughtered at Kerman slaughterhouse were inspected for infection with D. evansi. Forty nine of 309 camels (15.85%) were infected with adult forms of D. evansi. The infection rate increased with age (P>0.05). Infection rate of D. evansi was significantly different between male and female camels (P<0.01). D. evansi is highly endemic and constitutes an important health problem to camels in this area, resulting in high morbidity, impaired working capacity, and lowered productivity. Camelus dromedaries in Southeast Iran usually suffer from low grade infections with Dipetalonema evansi.
