Antibiotic susceptibility of Clostridium perfringens  from organic broiler chickens

ABSTRACT

 

Alimolaei M, Ezatkhah M, Shamsaddini Bafti M, Amini M.,  Antibiotic susceptibility of Clostridium perfringens from organic broiler chickens, Onl J Vet Res., 19(7): 465-470, 2015. Forty five C. perfringens isolates from 8 organic broiler farms were tested for antibiotic resistance. Amoxicillin, chloramphenicol and cephalothin were most active against C perfringens.  Resistance to clindamycin, penicillin G, bacitracin, erythromycin, tetracycline and co-trimoxazole ranged 51 to 90%. C perfringes exhibited 27 resistant phenotypes. All isolates, except one, were resistant to two or more antimicrobial agents or 2 isolates (4.44%) and co-trimoxazole/tetracycline were the most frequent resistant phenotypes occurring in 11% of isolates. This level of resistance was puzzling since antibiotics are not usually used in organic broiler farms. Antibiotic resistant Clostridium perfringens may have become ubiquitous in the area.
