Computed tomography of biceps brachii muscle volume and insertion site on coronoid process (CP) in dogs with and without CP disease.

Volume of the biceps brachii muscle (BBM) and site of insertion to the coronoid process (MCP) in large dogs with (58) or without (23) coronoid disease (MCD) were measured tomographically. BBM muscle volume was determined by CT scans of axial, dorsal and sagittal views. For dogs with suspected elbow and/or shoulder joint disease, scans from humeral head to 5cm distal to radial head were done. Measurement of BBM tendon site insertion to MCP was done with Horos 3D curved MPR function at the muscle to tendon transition zone in axial view of radial head. Bilateral and unilateral MCD was diagnosed in 58.6 and 41.4% dogs respectively, 69% being males. Fragmented MCD was found in 79 elbow joints (68%). Differences (P < 0.05) were found with BBM insertion site on MCP and BBM volume between dogs with MCD and without MCD (controls) but no differences with sex, age or weight. However, BBM volume correlated (P < 0.05) with weight and age. Because BBM volume was higher in dogs without MCD, we find that muscle volume was not related with incidence of MCD in this study.
