ABSTRACT

Dube PN, Hosetti BB., Effect of sodium cyanide on freshwater fish (Labeo rohita), Onl J Vet Res., 29 (9): 563-574, 2025. We report effect of 96h exposure to sodium cyanide on freshwater fish, Labeo rohita rendering an LC50 of 0.32 mg/l. Water was maintained at 26±1 șC, pH 7.2±0.2 at 26șC, dissolved oxygen 6.3±0.8 mg/l, total hardness 23.4±3.4 mg as CaCO3/l, phosphate 0.39±0.002 μg/l, salinity 0.01ppm, specific gravity 1.001 and conductivity less than 10 μS/cm, renewed daily with 12-12 h photoperiod. Feeding was stopped 2 days prior to exposure. We recorded 30% mortality at 30mg/l, 50% at 0.32 and 100% at 0.34mg/l cyanide. Compared with untreated controls, in exposed fish, we observed changes in skin colour, hyperactivity, loss of balance, rapid swimming, increased surfacing, opercular activity and convulsions.

Keywords: Labeo rohita, toxicity, sodium cyanide, behavioural response.
