Serum electrolyte levels after dexamethasone and isoflupredone administration in normal Holstein calves.

ABSTRACT

 

Chalmeh A, PourjafarM, Nazifi S, Reza Zarei M, Limoei M., Serum electrolyte levels after dexamethasone and isoflupredone administration in normal Holstein calves, Onl J Vet Res., 19(2): 66-73, 2015. Two groups of 5, 6-10 month healthy Holstein calves each, were injected 1mg/kg dexamethasone sodium phosphate or isoflupredone acetate IM, respectively, on 2 consecutive days. Blood samples were taken at administration (controls) and days 2, 3, 5 and 7. Significant decreases were observed in serum potassium, chloride, calcium and phosphorus concentrations after isoflupedone administration compared with day 0 control values. The same electrolytes levels were lower in calves given isoflupredone compared with those administered dexamethazone. Neither drug appeared to affect sodium or magnesium levels in any group. Changes in serum electrolyte levels following isoflupredone administration may be due to greater mineralocorticoid effects compared with dexamethasone.
