Studies on disposal pattern in an organized herd of Murrah buffaloes.

ABSTRACT

 

Taraphder S, Tomar SS, Gupta AK, Studies on disposal pattern in an organized herd of Murrah buffaloes, Onl J Vet Res., 15 (1): 68-75, 2011. The present study comprised 2306 calving records of 781 Murrah buffaloes sired by 135 bulls, spread over a period of 16 years from 1985 to 2000 at NDRI, Karnal, Haryana. Total disposal rate was 26.10 percent (culling-20.77% and mortality 5.33%). Voluntary culling was 5.38% and involuntary 15.39%. Parity and period (years) influenced (P<0.05) incidence of voluntary, involuntary, total culling and mortality.  Total disposal suggested that Expected Breeding value (EBV) (1954 Kg) was almost equal to that of buffaloes that died. With the disposal pattern and lower selection differential, overall genetic progress for milk yield was only 12 Kg. Maximum genetic progress was 43 Kg. If involuntary disposal was reduced to <5%, expected genetic gain could be ~5.6% herd average per generation of selection. For 13%, expected genetic gain would be 71.27 Kg (50 percent of total disposal).
