 Effect of doxapram on isoflurane anaesthesia recovery in dogs.

Sabiza S, Naddaf H, Baniadam A, Mosallanejad B., Effect of doxapram on recovery from isoflurane anesthesia in dogs, Onl J Vet Res., 20(5):345-352, 2016.  We report effect of intravenous doxapram on recovery from isoflurane anesthesia in dog. Twelve clinically healthy male mixed dogs were sedated by acepromazine and 30 min later induced by propofol titration maintained 30min by isoflurane. At end of anesthesia 2mg/kg doxapram was injected IV to 6 dogs. Another 6 controls were injected IV saline with same volume as treated dogs.  Physiological parameters were measured 30 min after sedation and 5, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50min after induction of anesthesia and recovery. Times of endotracheal extubation, first head lifting, first sternal recumbency and duration and quality of recovery were registered. Findings suggested that doxapram injected IV by the end of anesthesia hastened recovery about 15 min (p<0.05). Heart rate and blood pressure increased but end tidal CO2 decreased (p<0.05) with doxapram. Doxapram may accelerate recovery following isoflurane anesthesia in dogs.
