SUMMARY

 

Rooney J., Surfaces, friction and shape of the equine hoof, Onl J Vet Res., 3:21-40, 1999. Frictional wearing is a major factor in determining the shape of the hoof of the barefooted domesticated horse, the feral horse, zebra, and onager. The amount of friction and, so, the shape of the hoof is a function of the surface upon which the animal habitually moves and changes as the surface conditions change.
