ABSTRACT

Hosseinpour D, Sajedianfard J, Nazifi S, Kavoosi G, Fathi M., Effect of earthworm Eisenia fetida extract on blood and liver enzymes in Wistar rats, Onl J Vet Res., 19(2): 116-123, 2015. Groups of 6 adult male Wistar rats were administered 1.25ml/kg saline IP (controls), E. Fetida extract oral 300µg/0.75/kg, E Fetida IP  300ng/1.25 ml/kg) and heparin 180 IU/ 230-270 g of body weight IP (controls), daily for 7 days.  Rats were then sacrificed by ether and blood collected by cardiac puncture. Oral and  IP administration of  E Fetida induced a decline in mean platelet volume (MPV) compared with controls. There was no difference in MPV between rats given E. Fetida extract IP or orally. Heparin had no effect on MPV. E fetida had no effect on prothrombin time and partial thromboplastin time but prolonged bleeding time. Heparin and E Fetida decreased alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity but there was no difference between alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase between any group.
