ABSTRACT

Alo OS, Abatan MO, Subacute effects of lindane on Clarias gariepinus, Onl J Vet Res., 10 (2) : 102 -107, 2006. Effects of 80 parts per billion subacute lindane for 14 days on six Claris gariepinus fish are described. Six controls were not exposed to Lindane. Fish exposed to Lindane lost weight from 326 ± 7 ± 18.2 to 280.0 ± 9.3 grams by 14 days. In fish exposed to lindane, mean + SEM packed cell volume was 14.8 ± 2.9 but in controls 25.0 ± 2.7%, and in same order Hemoglobin 4.8 ± 2.4 and 8.4 ± 2.4 mg/dl, white blood cells 5580 ± 732.9 and 18150 ± 573.4 103/CM3, red blood cell count 2.57 ± 1.4 and 4.4 ± 0.89 106/UC and mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCHC) 31.7 ± 5.8 and 33.39 ± 2.64 g/dl, respectively.  Serum alanine phosphatase in fish exposed was  91 ± 13.74 and controls 6.50 ± 14.69 IU/L, aspartame transaminase 730 ± 110.06 and 450 ± 205.20 IU/L and alanine transaminase 67.50 ± 13.73 and 41.00 ± 16.32 IU/L. All values from fish exposed to Lindane, except MCHC were significantly different (P < 0.05) from same control values. Results suggest that Clarias gariepinus exposed to subacute lindane exhibited marked anorexia, reduced packed cell volumes anemia, weakness and leucopenia. Histopathology revealed marked inflammatory cell infiltration. The study suggested that lindane even in low doses is very toxic to Claris gariepinus and its presence in Nigerian water resources affects fresh water fish.
