ABSTRACT

Molaei AMM, Azari O, Vosough D, Mozaffari A., Case Study: Foreign body esophageal fistula in a calf, Onl J Vet Res., 15(6): 487-491, 2011.  A 2 month calf was referred to the veterinary hospital for treatment of a painful swelling mass at ventral surface of the neck. On clinical examination, all vital signs were normal but the animal was lethargic and depressed. Based on history, clinical and radiological findings, a perforating cervical esophageal foreign body was suspected and surgical intervention was carried out. A skin incision was performed on a swollen mass and a sinus tract with a wooden sharp foreign body (65 cm length) was found. After extraction of the foreign body and debridement of necrotic tissue from the sinus tract, a penrose drain was inserted in the wound. Treatment consisted of daily lavage of the wound with normal saline and administration of a broad spectrum antibiotic. The calf recovered one month later.
