ABSTRACT

Asgari Safdar AH., Effect of lipid-energy supplements on flushing in heat stressed ewes, Onl J Vet Res., 20(5):296-306, 2016. Effects of  different lipids (oil) and energy supplements on reproduction markers in heat stressed ewes are described. Groups of 12 ewes each were exposed to high environmental average temperatures (360C) and fed NRC iso-energy and iso-nitrogenous diets of barley grains, 5% calcium salts of fatty acids (CSFA) with flaxseed oil (ω3) or 5% CSFA with sunflower oil (ω6). Controls were fed a basal diet. Flushing period started 2 weeks before insemination (ram introduction) and continued for 3 weeks after. Ewes fed 5% CSFA flaxseed oil had greater (P < 0.04) offspring, cholesterol and progesterone levels compared with controls.

Keywords: CSFA; lambing; flushing period; reproductive performance.
