ABSTRACT

Abbas MS,  Al-Taai NA, Khalil NK., Prevalence of Mycobacterium in geckos (Hemidactylus spp) in Baghdad, Iraq, Onl J Vet Res., 21(7):406-409, 2017.  Feces collected from 100 geckos (Hemidactylus spp) captured around Baghdad, Iraq were cultured on Lowenstein-Jenson media incubated at 37 C° for 8 weeks and tested for presence of mycobacteria. Media were examined for colonies twice weekly for 8 weeks. Diagnosis was based on colony growth, characteristics, acid fast staining and production of chromogenes. Mycobacterium were present in 23% geckos isolated as acid-fast staining bacilli and rapid growing colonies. This is a first report of high prevalence of Non Tuberculous Mycobacteria (NTM) in geckos in Baghdad. Infected animals can transmit mycomytosis to humans and precautions are warranted with domestic geckos.
