ABSTRACT

Akhter M, Behan AA, Rajput MN, Kaka U,  Tunio SA, Rizwana H, Janyaro H, Abbas W., Effect of 2, 3 and 4 times daily feeding (1% body weight) on goat growth and carcass, Onl J Vet Res., 25 (3): 214-225, 2021. We report effect of feeding frequencies on growth performance of goat kids. Three groups of 6 male goat kids each were given green grass ad libitum equally with concentrate twice at 8 am and 8 pm, 3 times at 8 am, 2 pm and 8 pm and 4 times at 8 am, 1 pm, 5 pm and 8 pm all diets equivalent to 1% body weight, daily for 90 days. Compared (P <0.05-0.0001) with kids fed twice daily, in those feed 4 times, live weights were ~17 -20% higher, daily weight gains 46-53%, body length ~12%, heart girth 9%, dressing ~7%, shoulder and breast cuts 17-20%, and drip 42% and cooking losses ~13%.  Similar but less significant results were found with those fed 3 times daily. We found no differences with wither heights, chest depth, pre slaughter weight, carcass weights or non-carcass components. Our results suggest that compared with kids fed twice daily, feeding 4 times may boost weight, body size and some primal meat cuts weight.
