Hematology, biochemistry and FNA cytology of primary hepatic plasma cell tumor in a dog:

ABSTRACT

 

Nikousefat Z, Hashemnia M, Javdani M., Hematology, biochemistry and FNA cytology of primary hepatic plasma cell tumor in a dog, Onl J Vet Res., 19(3): 180-189, 2015. A 7-year-old female Mix breed dog presented with waxing/waning appetite, weight loss and exercise intolerance. The abdomen felt tight and distended with palpable splenomegaly with fluid wave. The most remarkable abnormality was a bilirubin concentration of 7.9 mg/dl with globulin and albumin concentrations of 1.9 and 2.1g/dl, respectively. Peritoneal fluid 500ml appeared transparent orange with 3.0 g/dl total protein. Abdominal effusion showed 81% non-degenerate neutrophils, 8% small lymphocytes, 10% macrophages, 1% eosinophils, occasional reactive mesothelial cells and many erythrocytes. Liver FNA cytology showed highly cellular smears of numerous hepatocyte aggregates intermingled with many atypical plasma cells. A diagnosis of a tumor of plasma cell origin was made based on findings. Primary extramedullary plasmacytoma of the liver is a rare tumor in dogs and should be considered as a differential diagnosis of hepatic masses.
