Seroepidemiology of herpes and parainfluenza viruses in Holstein cows.

ABSTRACT

 

Farzinpour M, Pourjafar M, Badiei K, Ghane M, Zare K., Seroepidemiology of herpes and parainfluenza viruses in Holstein cows, Onl J Vet Res., 27 (4): 199-203, 2023. Authors report sero-epidemiology of bovine herpesvirus-1 and parainfluenza virus-3 in 730 three month to 7 year old unvaccinated dairy Holstein cows from 22 industrial and semi-industrial farms. For associated risk factors we recorded age, respiratory diseases, milk production, husbandry and herd size analyzed by Chi-square and logistic regression test. We found 140 with herpes and 672 influenza viruses by ELISA yielding prevalence of 19% (95% CI: 16-22) and 91.3% (95% CI: 89-93%). Herpes antibodies were associated with all respective factors, except age and milk production whereas influenza antibodies were with all risk factors (P < 0.05). However, increased age and milk output was associated with influenza viruses  (P<0.05). Animals with less respiratory disease had less antibodies to both viruses and as expected more in larger herds.
