ABSTRACT

Sarchahi AA, Vesal N,  Gholipour MA. Dose dependent acepromazine-xylazine combination effects on intraocular pressure, pupil size and heart rate, in clinically normal dogs, Onl J Vet Res 13(1): 130-137, 2009.  Dose dependent effects of intramuscular acepromazine-xylazine combinations with atropine on intraocular pressure (IOP), pupil size and heart rate were evaluated in 24 dogs. Groups of 12 dogs each were given 0.05 mg/kg acepromazine maleate (LA) with 0.5 mg/kg xylazine hydrochloride (HX), 0.03 mg/kg LA with 0.8 mg/kg HX, 0.08 mg/kg HA with 0.3 mg/kg HX, or 0.05 mg/kg HA with 0.5 mg/kg HX and 0.04 mg/kg atropine. Two treatments were tested in each dog with at least 8 days between treatments. Drugs were mixed in a syringe prior to administration and injected intramuscularly into the thigh muscle. Following drug administration, dogs were left undisturbed in their cage for 15-20 minutes. IOP of left eye 16.4 ± 2.6 was lower than that the right eye 17.7 ± 2.7  (P < 0.018) but differences in pupil size did not occur before drug injections. In those given LA there was no difference in IOP but in those given LA-HX, IOP declined in both eyes. In dogs injected LA with HX or with atropine IOP declined in both eyes but only differences in right eyes were statistically significant (P < 0.05). We found no difference in IOP between eyes in treated dogs. Heart rate in dogs given LA or LA and HX declined (P < 0.00001). Results showed a decreasing effect on IOP in both right and left eyes following sedation with various doses of acepromazine-xylazine combinations with or without atropine, although these changes were within normal ranges.
