ABSTRACT

Niwetpathomwat A, Doungchawee G, An investigation of rodent leptospirosis in Bangkok, Thailand, Onl J Vet Res., 9 (2): 95-100, 2005. Leptospirosis is a major public health disease worlwide transmitted direct or indirectly within leptospira reservoirs such as rodents. We report prevalence of leptospirosis in different rodents kidneys captured in Bangkok, Thailand. Leptospirae were detected by direct immune fluorescence assay by FITC conjugated, rabbit anti-leptospira antibodies serovar bataviae, bratislava, canicola, hebdomadis, javanica and pyrogenes. We found different (P < 0.05) prevalence amongst rodents. Rattus novergicus had highest prevalence (63%), R. rattus 6 and Suncus murinus 14%. Prevalence of each  serovar ranged 12% to 29% but most prevalent was L. canicola. We find high prevalence for rodent leptospirosis in Bangkok.
