ABSTRACT

Siavosh Haghighi ZM, Moaddab H., Lateral patellar luxation due to congential hyperplastic goiter in an Arabian foal, Onl J Vet Res., 17 (7): 346-350, 2013. A one-day old Arabian male goitrous foal with a congenital abnormality in the musculoskeletal system was presented. Physical and radiographic examinations showed that the animal had lateral patellar luxation in both hind limbs along with unilateral thyroid gland enlargement. Thyroid hormone levels in serum were in the normal reference ranges but histopathology revealed hyperplasia and hypertrophy of thyroid glands. Since thyroid hormones play an important role in development of musculoskeletal system and bone formation, the patellar luxation in the present case due to shallowness of the trochlear groove could be attributed to congenital hypothyroidism .
