Effect of  intravenous Medetomidine-Buprenorphine on canine tear flow

ABSTRACT

 

Soontornvipart K., P. Raušer, H. Kecová, L. Lexmaulová: Effect of intravenous medetomidine-buprenorphine on canine tear flow, Onl J Vet Res., 7:10-16, 2003. Tear flow rate was measured in 28 healthy dogs and 5 dogs with Dry-Eye Syndrome (DES) using the Shirmer Tear Test (STT). STT was measured before, and 10 and 30 minutes after anesthetic IV pre-medication with 20 µg/kg medetomidine and 10 µg/kg buprenorphine. Untreated healthy dogs had a mean STT of 16.9 + 1.08 mm/min before treatment, 1.7+ 0.94 mm/min at 10 min, and 0 mm/min at 30 min, after treatment. Animals with DES had mean STT of 6.4 + 0.18 mm/min before treatment and 0 mm/min by 10 min after treament.  Age, breed, sex and body weight did not affect STT values. The results suggest that tear flow should be monitored during pre-anaesthesia to prevent corneal damage; The cornea should be protected by administration of artificial tear preparations.
