Effect of intranasal and intramuscular midazolam-flumazenil on sedation and recovery in Lohmann layers.

Sedation by intranasal (IN) and intramuscular midazolam (MDZ) and recovery by IN and intramuscular flumazenil (FLU) in Lohman layers are described. Three groups of 8 Lohmann layers each were administered  6mg/kg midazolam and/or 0.05 mg/kg flumazenil by IN and leg or pectoral muscles. Sedation by IN and pectoral  muscle routes occurred sooner than through leg muscle injections. FLU neutralized sedation by MDZ in all birds. Response to stimulus factor in layers treated IN was shorter than in other groups. Righting reflex was not affected by any route treatment reaching a maximum within 20 minutes. Heart rate in layers injected in leg muscles was less than other groups and respiratory rate was reduced further by IN administration compared with other routes. Findings suggested that IN and pectoral muscle midazolam administrations to Lohmann layers  induced faster onset, but shorter sedation.
