Lopez PR, Da Silva Dumont CB, Da Cunha Barreto Vianna AR, De Pino Albuquerque Maranhão R, Menezes Okiyama FT, Nogueira K, Mendes De Lima EM., Effect of age and exercise on morphometric structural changes in surface and deep digital flexor tendons of quarter horses, Onl J Vet Res., 18(2):167-175, 2014.  A study to determine if age and exercise affect ultrasound morphometric structural changes in surface and deep digital flexor tendons of quarter horses is described. Athlete and foal quarter horses were compared for differences in sonographic parameters that demonstrate adaptation to exercise and age. Length of the palmar metacarpal region, transversal and longitudinal diameters, transversal area (TA), parallelism, and echogenicity of the surface (SDFT) and deep digital flexor tendons (DDFT) were evaluated. In transversal images, longitudinal diameters of the athlete SDFT and DDFT were greater as well as the DDFT transversal diameters. In foals, SDFT and TA values were greater whereas in athletes, TA of DDFT was greater. There were no statistical differences for parallelism and echogenicity between any group. There were similarities among tendon dimensions of adult athletes and two year old foals. Since the groups had skeletal maturity, it was not possible to define whether age or, specifically, exercise, were decisive factors in tendon functional and structural changes in the horses.
