Effect of Prosopis farcta root on blood lipids and aorta in rabbits fed cholesterol for 30 days.

ABSTRACT

Prosopis farcta root may affect atherosclerosis in humans. Four groups of 8 young male New Zealand white (NZW) rabbits were fed standard pellet or gavaged 2% cholesterol daily. The rabbits were gavaged distilled water (controls), simvastatin 0.6mg/kg or P. farcta root extracts 500 mg/kg/day for 30 days. Blood samples were assessed for total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL). At necropsy, aortas were assessed for fatty streak and atheromatous plaque factors. Serum lipids increased in high cholesterol groups compared with controls (P<0.05). P. farcta root reduced TCl, HDL, TG, LDL, and VLDL levels compared with same values in rabbits fed a high cholesterol diet (P < 0.050). Atheromatous plaques composed of fatty streaks with lipid-laden macrophages (foam cells), extensive necrotic area, and calcification were formed in the thoracic and abdominal aortas in hypercholestrolemic rabbits.
