Isolation, identification and characterization of toxigenic Pasteurella multocida

and Manhemia hemolytica from sheep and goats.

ABSTRACT

 

Tahamtan Y, Sahragard I., Isolation, identification and characterization of toxigenic Pasteurella multocida and Manhemia hemolytica from sheep and goats, Onl J Vet Res., 26 (6): 393-401, 2022. We determined pathogenicity of M. haemolytica and P. multocida from sheep and goats in Fars, Iran by biochemical, susceptibility, lethality and epidemiological tests. Seven hundred and fifty samples were collected from nasal and throat finding 34 (4.47%) P. multocida positive for oxidase, catalase, indole production, and fermentation of glucose and lactose. We observed non-hemolytic colonies on blood agar which failed to grow on MacConkey agar. The isolates induced 50-100% mortality by mouse assay mean dead time in 18%. All isolates (100%) were resistant to Oxytetracycline and Erythromycin, and sensitive to penicillin but intermediately sensitive trimethoprim. The monthly prevalence was at its highest level in spring and late summer. Several factors including microbial agent, environment and host are involved in respiratory disease in sheep and goats. These factors should be focus for further research and development of control strategies.
