Seroepidemiological study of Neospora caninum in dairy cattle.

ABSTRACT

 

Ansari-Lari M, Motlaghb SA, Moravvejib M, Bahramib S, Hosseini A., Seroepidemiological study of Neospora caninum in dairy cattle, Onl J Vet Res, 15 (2): 155-161, 2011. Prevalence of Neospora  caninum in dairy cattle herds in Shiraz, Iran is reported. Related risk factors for N. caninum infection and association with abortion was investigated. Thirty two herds were used and blood was taken from ~10% of each herd. Sera (169) was tested for N. caninum by ELISA. History of abortions, dogs or wild carnivores feeding off aborted offal was recorded. Individual prevalence was 58% and herd 78%. Thirty percent of herds had had recent abortions and 8.7% recurrent ones. We found no correlation between N. caninum, abortion or dogs. We did find that abortion and wild carnivores with access to aborted offal was a significant factor (P=0.006). Our results suggested that seroprevalence of N. caninum in these herds was relatively high but is not a significant reproduction problem in the region. Prospective cohort studies are needed to evaluate the definite role of N caninum.
