ABSTRACT

Khordadmehr M, Khodakarm-Tafti A, Namavari M, Mansourian M, Karimiyan A, Rahimian A., Effect of host cell on virulence of Neospora caninum, Online J Vet Res, 16(1):38-48, 2012. Neospora caninum causes major bovine abortions and neonatal mortality in cattle, sheep, goat and horse. Vero cells are the most frequently used cell line for culture of Neospora caninum but problems with propagation and required level of nutritional components for the media persist. Attenuation of virulence after 3 months continuous passages of suspension culture of Theileria lestoquardi-infected lymphoblastoid (TLI) cell line was compared with Vero cell line. Different doses of N. caninum tachyzoites harvested from these cell lines were inoculated into embryonated broiler eggs and daily mortality rate, pathological and molecular effects were recorded. Continuous passage of Neospora caninum in both cell lines were similar suggesting that TLI cells could be used for vaccine production.
