Effects of intra-cerebro-ventricular ghrelin with or without nociceptin on feed intake in Ross cockerels

Nociceptin N/OFQ agonists have been shown to increase food intake in mammals and birds. The effect of intra-cerebro-ventricular (ICV) injection of ghrelin with or without Nociceptin or Nociceptin antagonists (Nphe1) and Nociception (1-13) NH2 on the feed intake of feed deprived broiler cockerels is reported. ICV ghrelin in 3-h food-deprived chickens caused a dose-dependent decrease in food consumption, ICV 16nmol N/OFQ increased food intake in 3-h food deprived chickens, pre-treatment with ghrelin (0.6 nmol) completely abolished the effect of N/OFQ (16 nmol) on food Intake observed 60 and 120 min post treatment and cumulative food intake was significantly increased by 8 nmol nociceptin antagonist pre-treatment. The findings suggest that ghrelin decreased food intake and hyperphagic effects of N/OFQ by reducing N/OFQ  levels in the brain.
