Survey of gastrointestinal parasites in laboratory animals.

Incidence of gastrointestinal parasites in laboratory animals is reported. Sixty laboratory Sprague Dawley rats, 20 short hair England guinea pigs and 20 Dutch rabbits were necropsied for intestinal parasites Seventy percent were infested but only nematodes and cestodes were found. 86.66% rats were infested by 3 nematodes (56.66% Aspiculuris tetraptera, 43.66% Syphacia obvelata and 16.66% Syphacia muris) and 3 cestodes (10% Cysticercus fasciolaris, 41.66% Hymenolepis diminuta and 11.66 Hymenolepis nana). 17 guinea pigs (85%) were infested by Nematoparaspidora uncinata and 45% of rabbits with Passalurus ambiguous. Maximum and minimum infection frequency occurred in rats and rabbits, respectively. The parasites are common in laboratory animals. However, trematode and protozoa were not found. Inadequate space between animals was probably the main cause of high infestation rate.
