Effect of chromium picolinate on lipid metabolism in chickens.

ABSTRACT
Loh TC, Foo HL, Ramli M, Tan BK: Effect
of chromium picolinate on metabolism of lipids in
chickens. Onl J Vet Res29 (10): 650-656, 2025. A total of 280 of 18 groups of day-old
male and female broiler chicks were fed 3 diets of 6 replicates with 150 or 300
chromium piconilate (CP). Controls were not given CP.
Birds were kept in 3-tier cages throughout experimental period. A corn-soybean
meal basal starter diet was formulated By
6 weeks 3 male and 3 females from each cage were scarified for abdominal fat
and blood lipid samples fasted 12h. Compared
with controls, plasma triacylglycerol declined 47% and abdominal fat/body
weight 28% (P < 0.05) in birds given 300ppm CP. In this experiment plasma
protein, total cholesterol, cholesteryl ester, free cholesterol, phospholipid
and very low-density lipoprotein were not affected. However, concerning low
density lipoproteins (VLDP), triacylglycerol declined ~50% at 150ppp and ~23%
at 300ppm CP whereas cholesterol declined 33% and 17% respectively. In the case
of VLDP, surface/core ratios declined ~50% at both doses. The results suggest that chromium picolinate may alter lipid metabolism, and reduce VDLD
particle size and abdominal fat in growing broilers.
