ABSTRACT

Shukla MK., Effect of progesterone ear implant on reproductive parameters in cattle, Onl J Vet Res., 10 (1):42-46, 2006. An experiment was conducted to study the effect of a norgestomet ear implant along with intramuscular injection of norgestomet and estradiol valerate (Syncro-Mate B), on reproductive performance of a Bos taurus X Bos indicus (HF X Sahiwal) crossbred herd in sub Himalayan terrains of India. Post partum anestrous animals with absence of ovarian activity were treated with Syncro-Mate B ear implant and intramuscular injection of norgestomet and estradiol valerate. Equal numbers of untreated animals under similar conditions were used as controls. Estrus was induced (83.33%) in treated cattle compared with controls (0%) with a mean duration of 43.5±6.02h after implant. The percentage of treated cattle not induced was 16.66% lower (P<0.01) compared with controls (100 %). In animals with implant the service period of 108.5 ± 31 days was less (P < 0.01) compared with controls (183.5±38 days). Although the implants induced and synchronized estrus, in crossbreds conception (41.66 %) was not high possibly due to differences between artificial insemination and natural estrus.

Key words: Syncro-Mate B, norgestomet, estradiol valerate, crossbred cattle
