ABSTRACT

Gheichivand S, Chalechale A, Rezaei F, Hashemnia M., Prevalence of intestinal protozoa in dogs in Western Iran, Onl J Vet Res., 20(10):679-685, 2016. We report prevalence of zoonotic and other gastrointestinal protozoa in dogs in Kermanshah, Iran. Feces from 120 dogs were tested for parasites using sucrose flotation and Teleman’s sedimentation methods. Overall prevalence of coccidia infection was 44% and parasites found were Isospora spp. 19%, Cryptosporidium spp. 17%, Entamoeba coli (12.5%), Giardia (9%), Sarcocyst (6%) and Entamoeba histolytica (4%). Concurrent infection with 2 or 3 species was present in 22.6% of positive samples. Significant differences were found between pet and guard dogs (P<0.05) but not with sex or age (P≥0. 05). Results suggest high prevalence of intestinal protozoa in dogs referred to veterinary clinics in Kermanshah, Iran.
