 Effect of different patterns of molar teeth extraction on learning in Wistar rats

ABSTRACT

 

Shojaeepour R, Jahanimoghadam F, Pourgholamali N, Shojaeepour S, Sharifi H., Effect of different patterns of molar teeth extraction on learning in Wistar rats, Onl J Vet Res., 18(11): 886-894, 2014. We report effects of different patterns of molar teeth extraction on learning in rats. Groups of 15 rats each had extractions of the maxillary bilateral molars (E1) and left maxillary and the right mandibular molars (E2). Controls (C) had no extractions. Morris Water Maze experiments were done a week after extractions to determine spatial learning. During learning, target duration or time spent in target zone in groups C, E1 and E2 were 12.47s, 11.09s and 11.13s, respectively, revealing a significant difference (P < 0.05) in controls compared with molar extracted groups (p < 0.05). Similarly the target path length defined as the path length in the target zone in controls (212.28cm) was significantly greater than in other groups. The findings suggest that molar extraction may impair learning ability in 8 week old Wistar male albino rats.
