Molecular characterization of porcine rotavirus strains

Solarte Y, Correa A, Barrera J, Mogollon D, Jerabek L, Gutierrez MF., Molecular characterization of porcine rotavirus strains Onl J Vet Res.,  3: 1-14, 1999. One hundred thirty four diarrhea samples from suckling pigs between 5 and 29 days old were collected within a one year period between June 1995 and June 1996. Forty-one (31%) of the 134 were Rotavirus (RTV) positive by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) analysis, and all were identified as group A with short migration patterns. The analysis demonstrated the presence of four electropherotypes. From among all of the positive samples, 9 were selected at random, to be grown in MA-104 cells, and 22 samples were selected for electron microscope examination. Successful adaptation to cell culture was obtained with two of the field isolates and the 5 reference strains which were used as procedural controls. The viral serotyping was carried out by means of RT-PCR and the serotype was found to be G5.
