Effect of Salvia Officinalis on serum luteinizing, follicle stimulating, and testosterone hormones in adult male Wistar rats with multiple sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory disease of the central nervous system with multifocal areas of demyelination. Effects of 400 and 600mg/kg Salvia Officinalis (SO) gavaged to groups of 6 rats each with or without MS on serum Luteinizing (LH), follicle stimulating (FSH) and testosterone hormones are described. Controls were rats with or without MS gavaged SO or not treated. MS was induced with 0.2% Cuprizone in feed confirmed by Kerschensteiner’s daily clinical score test. Blood taken from the heart was used to determine serum LH, FSH and testosterone. Serum LH, FSH and testosterone levels in MS controls and those with MS, were lower compared with healthy controls or those without MS. Hormones in mice without MS, increased compared with healthy controls, whereas in those with MS, increased compared with MS controls. Results suggest that SO may affect serum LH, FSH and testosterone in rats with MS.
