ABSTRACT

K Sahin, N Sahin, M Sari., Effects of Seleniferous Astragalus on digestibility, growth, and serum and tissue selenium concentrations in lambs. Onl J Vet Res., 6:42-46, 2002. Digestibility, growth, serum and tissue selenium concentrations were compared in groups of 4 month old lambs each fed hay (controls), Astragalus gummifer or Astragalus kurdicus  (70% forage and 30% concentrate) containing 0.2, 50, and 52 ppm selenium, respectively, for 90 days. In lambs fed Astralagus spp, ataxia, paralysis, hair loss, lacrimation, and cracked hoof walls appeared by 30 days.  Between 30 and 90 days, serum and tissue selenium concentrations had increased 37 to 90 and 20 to 48 times above the hay control values, respectively, whereas feed intake and weight gain had declined 27 to 29% and 308% respectively. The results suggested that A. gummifer and kurdicus fed at 70% or more of a ration is toxic to lambs.
