ABSTRACT

Amiri Andi M, Fallah F., Effect of selenium and vitamin E administration to pregnant cows on offspring weight, colostrum and serum IgG levels, Onl J Vet Res., 19(11): 769-775, 2015. Three groups of 20 pregnant Holstein cows each were supplemented or injected 8g vitamin E with or without selenium 21 days before partus. IgG colostrum levels were higher in calves born from cows supplemented oral or injectable vitamin E with selenium. Calves born from cows fed oral vitamin E had highest colostrum IgG levels and weaning weights compared with those given other treatments. Treatments had no significant effect on cows or calves IgG serum levels at 7d age, weight at birth, or later. Results suggest that oral vitamin E may have had an effect on IgG levels in colostrum and weaning weight of calves. Results were not compared with untreated controls and must be evaluated in this context.

Key words: Vitamin E, selenium, close up, immunoglobulin G, calves, colostrum.
